It turns out that the world’s most beloved museum isn’t the Louvre or the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art. According to TripAdvisor users, the top-rated museum is the Art Institute of Chicago. This museum is famous for Grant Wood’s “American Gothic” painting.
Based on reviews from around the globe over the past year, the Art Institute of Chicago received a perfect five-star rating from more than 6,500 reviewers. A TripAdvisor member from Kansas shared their recent visit, saying, “The institute is clean and much larger than you’d expect. If you want to see art from around the world, this is the place to go.”
The Art Institute of Chicago boasts over 300,000 artworks from across the globe, including Wood’s famous painting of a farmer and his daughter, Marc Chagall’s “America Windows,” and Claude Monet’s “Stack of Wheat.” The museum’s collections feature African-American art, children’s art, portraits, mythology, and pieces related to the Silk Road.
Following the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City ranks second, with the State Hermitage Museum and Winter Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia, coming in third. The top ten list is mostly made up of American and European museums.
