Dubai, already famous for its sky-high tennis court atop the 1,000-foot Burj al Arab, is now looking to push the boundaries even further. Polish architect Krysztof Kotala has proposed an ambitious project: an underwater tennis complex in the Persian Gulf, positioned between the Burj al Arab and the Palm Jumeirah islands.
This innovative design features a large, curved roof and will house seven tennis courts. It also aims to function as an aquarium, with a coral reef on the roof showcasing vibrant sea life for both players and spectators. The complex is envisioned to resemble a natural atoll, adding to Dubai’s impressive list of record-breaking structures.
However, building this underwater arena presents significant challenges. Engineers are concerned about constructing a single, massive pane of glass strong enough to withstand the water pressure. Estimates suggest that the transparent ceiling will need to be a continuous pane at least 108 feet wide to cover the court and accommodate viewers.
Despite these challenges, Kotala remains optimistic about his groundbreaking plans, stating that Dubai’s tradition of luxury and innovation makes it an ideal location for this unique project.
