High above the Maasai Mara, at the very spot where some of the romantic scenes from *Out of Africa* were filmed, the luxury resort Angama Mara has just opened its doors. This is easily one of Kenya’s most anticipated openings of the year.
Angama Mara features two intimate camps, each with just 15 tented suites, perched on the edge of the Oloololo Escarpment. This location is one of the most sought-after in the area. The lodge’s Pavilion, situated between the two camps, offers a range of amenities including a fitness center, a 40-foot-long swimming pool, a curated gallery of African art, clothing, and jewelry, and a sunlit studio where local Maasai women craft custom beaded items.
Led by renowned industry figures Steve and Nicky Fitzgerald, formerly of &Beyond, Angama Mara provides excellent year-round game viewing in the Mara Triangle. A unique feature of the lodge is its private track that offers guests the chance to witness the dramatic Mara River crossing, one of Africa’s most spectacular events.
The resort, inspired by the Swahili word for ‘suspended in mid-air,’ appears to float 1,000 feet above the Great Rift Valley. Each tented suite has floor-to-ceiling glass fronts, through which guests can see hot air balloons drifting by every morning. Rates start at $750 per person per night, all-inclusive.
